Officer Arrested for DUI After Leaving Multiple Accident Scenes

Metro-east police officer arrested for DUI after leaving multiple accident scenes
The Belleville News-Democrat by Elizabeth Donald - April 17, 2012

Alton, IL - A police officer accused of drunk driving and fleeing the scene of an accident is on desk duty during the investigation. Officer Christopher Mattila faces misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and two counts of leaving the scene of an accident. Investigators believe Mattila, 39, rear-ended a car and sideswiped another on Sunday night, but failed to stop at either accident. Police found his car abandoned just north of Alton city limits, and Mattila was arrested at 1 a.m. Monday. The internal affairs unit of Alton Police are conducting an investigation of Mattila's alleged actions and he is on restricted desk duty in the interim. Any disciplinary action will ultimately be decided by Alton Police Chief David Hayes, who was unavailable for comment. Contact reporter Elizabeth Donald at edonald@bnd.com or 239-2501.
