PHILADELPHIA, PA - The National Press Photographers Association is fighting charges filed against a college student who took pictures of a police traffic stop in Philadelphia. Police Lt. Raymond Evers said Monday that the Temple University photojournalism student was arrested for other offenses, not for taking pictures. A lawyer for the photographers' group says student Ian Van Kuyk (van COOK') was sitting on his front steps March 14 when police pulled over a vehicle. Attorney Mickey Osterreicher says Van Kuyk began taking photos and officers asked him to stop. The lawyer says the student asserted his First Amendment rights, but was pushed and shoved by officers before being arrested. Van Kuyk has been charged with obstruction, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
