WHITE PLAINS, NEW YORK - A former Weschester County Jail guard was sentenced today to six years in jail for kicking and beating an inmate who eventually died from injuries he suffered in the incident. Paul M. Cote, 43, of Mahopac, was convicted in U.S. District Court in White Plains in September 2006 of violating the civil rights of Zoran Teodorovic, who was a mentally-ill homeless man jailed on a trespassing charge when the incident occurred on Oct. 10, 2000. Teodorovic slipped into a coma and died in December 2001. But Judge Charles Brieant tossed out the jury conviction, saying there wasn't enough evidence to find Cote guilty. That decision was overturned by the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in a decision written by Judge Sonia Sotomayor, who has been nominated for the U.S. Supreme Court.
