Cop who robbed cig sellers will patrol cell
The New York Post by Bruce Golding - May 24, 2012
A crooked cop who used his badge, gun and NYPD “raid” jacket to rip off cigarette smugglers got 33 months in the slammer yesterday from a judge who called the caper “baffling and disappointing.”
“When the public sees police officers commit crimes, it casts doubt on the whole structure we have of encouraging respect for the police,” Manhattan federal Judge Sidney Stein lamented.
Stein also noted in amazement that “on top of it all,” former Detective Kyron Collins, whose dad is a retired officer, flushed his career down the toilet and threw away his pension for a mere $1,700 share of the proceeds.
Collins, 37, pleaded guilty in January to robbing $7,000 in cash and a load of bootleg Newports after flashing a fake search warrant so he could ransack a stash house in The Bronx last year.
Defense lawyer Eric Siegle said in court yesterday that Collins’ “single, stupid act” came after he was “duped” by a pal, Ammar Alkamel, who claimed he had been swindled by the smugglers.
In reality, Alkamel — who’s currently on the run — “masterminded several other robberies” after getting busted for cigarette smuggling in Pennsylvania and becoming an informant for the feds, Siegle said.
