A former Rensselaer County jail sergeant, Mark Piche, has pled guilty to federal charges, after widespread investigations including allegations of his involvement in a scheme to push county inmates to register and vote in the 2011 primary and general elections when then-Sheriff Jack Mahar was running for re-election.
The Albany Times Union also reports in the September 10, 2013 article, "Former Rensselaer County jail guard pleads to federal charge," that there were years of documented civil rights violations inside the county correctional facility, including sex assaults and prisoner beatings.
